The
name for the St. Martha's Guild is taken from the biblical Martha
who served meals to Jesus. The Marthas prepare the food and serve
at Parish functions such as Lenten Soup With Love, the Passover
Seder Dinner, Stewardship Dinner and special occasions such as
visits from the Bishop.
Soup
With Love has been a long standing Lenten tradition in Kingston
Parish each Wednesday during Lent. Fifty soup makers donate a wide
variety of delicious soups and 38 bread makers provide interesting
breads. Local ministers present a short inspirational homily
afterwards. We also receive great support from our congregation and
the community at large. Monies received from this project in 2001
were used to award two scholarships to Mathews High School students.
For
the first time in 2001 at Kingston Parish, a traditional Passover
Seder dinner was celebrated led by our good friends Gary and Barbara
Schechter who are Jewish. Much research was done and many hours
spent shopping for the correct ingredients. Preparation was led by
the Marthas and many parishioners were involved in the project. It
was a great success and we are making plans now for the next one.
The
Marthas are grateful to all who have responded to our needs for
soup, bread, sandwiches and goodies during the year. Membership is
open to anyone who would enjoy this ministry. Please contact one of
