Mathews
County covers almost the exact land area originally designated as
Kingston Parish of Gloucester County, Virginia, during the colonial
era. In 1791, the area was formed as an independent county, named in
honor of the delegate who sponsored the bill, Major Thomas Mathews,
Speaker of the Virginia House of Delegates.
